Admire the gorgeous ornaments and Romanesque arches of the former headquarters of Jardine Matheson
The magnificent building at the junction of Beijing East Road and the spacious Bund is the former Shanghai headquarters of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Located at 27 Bund, the building was originally completed in 1851. After several expansions and renovations, it is now home to a plethora of avant-garde galleries, restaurants, bars and private clubs. However, its original Renaissance-style exterior has been preserved. The first and second stories of the building feature solid Romanesque arches laid with gigantic granite, while the third through fifth stories are supported by four magnificent marble columns. Exquisite carvings on the facades hearken to its past glory. As darkness falls, the building is lit up by projection lamps, making its architectural details even more striking.
Admire world-class art at Rockbund Art Museum
No matter how many art museums you find in Shanghai, the Rockbund will still surprise you with an unmatched experience. The slim five-story building was once home to Shanghai Museum, one of the earliest museums in China. In 2007, renowned British architect David Chipperfield redesigned the building, transforming it into a fantastic contemporary art exhibition venue on the Bund. Unlike most museums laid out flat and spaciously, Rockbund Art Museum seeks to maintain privacy through a vertically extended space. Visitors can shuttle between layered spaces on different floors. Each year, the museum organizes at least four thought-provoking exhibitions with an aim to support artists’ exploration and showcase ambitious contemporary art projects.
Enjoy genuine Shanghai cuisine of the 1930s at Xi’s Villa
Julu Garden, where Xi’s Villa is located, is a tranquil garden near the Jing’an Temple in Shanghai. The garden has nine British-style wooden-and-brick villas featuring white walls, each with a small garden. Now a restaurant, Xi’s Villa is hidden in the most secluded corner in the garden. Many hold wedding banquets and birthday parties here. The three-floor restaurant boasts a spacious lobby and tranquil VIP rooms. Its interior design combines European elements and the classical Shanghai style of the 1930s, and demonstrates an elegant atmosphere. Its signature dishes, such as crispy young pigeon, sautéed shelled shrimp, braised bean curd with crab roe and fried crab roe, all belong to authentic Shanghai cuisine. Each can remind diners of the delicacies during their childhoods.
